Our Company History is Guitar History.
In the 1940s, it was more difficult than ever to source quality guitar strings. Gut strings were inconsistent by nature, and their requisitioning for use as field sutures in the war effort made them extremely scarce. Andrés Segovia, the Spanish virtuoso who had elevated the guitar from the parlor to the concert stage, turned to his friend Albert Augustine, a New York City based luthier, for help. Albert had been stringing up his guitars with fishing line made out of a new synthetic material called nylon. Seeing the potential to hone this raw material into a product worthy of musical expression, Albert endeavored to refine his nylon strings to Segovias satisfaction. Soon Alberts strings resounded in Segovias concerts, causing a fervor amongst guitarists in need of their own durable, reliable, brilliant strings. Before long the players that would shape the art of the guitar in the 20th century - from Segovia to an English prodigy named Julian Bream - all played Augustine Strings.
