FAQs
What type of worms can harm my dog?
The most common intestinal parasite found in dogs in the UK fall into two main categories – roundworms and tapeworms. Roundworms are the biggest concern, as they are also able to infect people. Dogs should be regularly wormed to remove these unwelcome parasites, and ensure no infection is passed on to other pets or people. Tapeworms often appear around the animals bottom as small white segments. Roundworms appear in faeces, sometimes still mobile.
How often should I worm my dog?
Adult dogs and puppies over 12 weeks of age should be wormed once every three months. We offer various wormers that are simple to use and effective. Puppies should be wormed for roundworm at 2 weeks of age and then re-treated at 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks of age to ensure continued protection from worms. Beaphar Worming Syrup or Beaphar Worming Cream are ideal for this. Be sure to use a wormer suitable for puppies, as the dosage is considerably different than for adult dogs.
Can you worm a pregnant dog with Beaphar WORMclear?
No, Beaphar WORMclear for Dogs has not been tested during pregnancy. Until the puppies are weaned, the mother should be wormed at the same time. If you are concerned about worms throughout pregnancy, talk to your vet.
My vet says pet shop wormers do not work - is this true?
By law, all pet medicines have to pass stringent testing to prove effectiveness, safety and quality before they make it to market. Indeed, to be allowed to be sold 'over the counter', products have to have a long and robust safety record. All Beaphar wormers have been proven effective and to 'do what it says on the pack'. Beaphar WORMclear contains the same high quality levels of active ingredient as many vet prescribed wormers. If you are unsure or concerned about the most suitable product for your pet, please feel free to contact our Customer Services Team who can guide you in the right direction.
Myths, Facts and FAQs about worms
Did you know...
Roundworms live in the dog's gut, feeding off food found there.
Roundworm eggs can remain infective in grass or soil for a year or more!
Some types of tapeworms are spread by fleas.
What can I do to reduce the spread of worms?
The main thing you can do is worm your dog once every three months. You can also make sure you pickup after your dog to reduce the risk of releasing worm eggs into the environment.
How do dogs get infested with worms?
Worm eggs need to 'mature' for up to two weeks on the grass before they become infective, so 'scooping the poop' should always be carried out, whether in an urban or rural environment. Eggs in fresh faeces are not able to infect people or pets.
Do I need to go to my vet for an effective dog wormer?
Vet strength wormers are now available 'over the counter' from your local pet shop. Beaphar WORMclear is one such vet strength wormer.
Other signs and symptoms
Pot Belly
A young kitten or puppy that is thin with a ‘pot belly’ is often described as a typical ‘wormy’ puppy or kitten. In young kittens and puppies, roundworms may cause abdominal swelling and pain, weight loss, vomiting or diarrhoea, and on rare occasions, rupture of the bowel.
Coughing
Migrating larvae in the lungs may cause coughing, which can be an important symptom. These larvae may also travel through the liver, brain or other tissues.
Scooting
If your dog keeps ‘scooting’, (where it drags its bottom across the floor), or if your pet appears to be cleaning its bottom more than usual, this may be due to itching caused by a worm infestation.
Loss of Appetite
A heavy worm infestation might make your pet feel very bloated, leading to a loss of appetite, vomiting or diarrhoea .
