Two Sides Of The Coins
Introduction To Chinese I Ching Coins
The Chinese cash coins with square holes at the center to buy things for about 2000 years under the rule of many, many emperors. The circle of the coin represented heaven and the square hole at the center represented earth. The Chinese characters on the front face of each coin identified the emperor who was ruling when the coin was made and typically included two characters saying "Tong Bao" to designate the coin as circulating currency or treasure, always backed by silver. The back of the coin often designated with Manchu characters the government mint that made the coin.
The symbols of the front of each coin translate as: Qian Long Circulating Currency. The back of the coin translates as: Boo (the curlicue on the left) which is the Manchu character for treasure and the character Su on the right which identifies Suzhou (pronounced Soochow) as the name of the mint that made the coin and Jiangsu as the province in which this mint was located. Typically, many coins were made by the Board of Public Works (or Revenue) which were located in Beijing, the capital of China.
