  • KING EDWARD POTATOES: The King Edward potato is one of the oldest varieties in the UK. Introduced in 1902, it has stood the test of time thanks to its fantastic taste and how easy it is to grow. It has a creamy white, floury flesh and produces a strong aromatic flavour. These seed potatoes are resistant to rot and scab, making them ideal for storage after harvesting.
  • MAIN CROP: Begin sowing these seed potatoes in mid-to-late April. They take longer to mature than the previous early crops; however, they produce much larger potatoes that are highly versatile and great for all types of cooking. If you are growing these at home or in an allotment, we suggest that after chitting the potatoes, they are planted straight in the ground to give the crops more space to grow. You will be able to harvest your main crop of potatoes between September and October.
  • PLANTING: To give your potato crops enough room to grow, sow your seed potatoes at a depth of 10 cm with a measurement of 30 cm between each potato in well fertilised soil or in potting compost. If you're planting in rows, leave 60\u201370 cm between each row. If you are planting in February and March, use a form of frost protection to ensure you maximise your crop. Either a cold frame or a plastic or glass cover will suffice to protect the new plants from the elements.
  • HARVESTING: After around 15\u201318 weeks, between September and October, depending on when you planted, you should see your potato plant's leaves start to turn yellow. At this point, you can cut them down and remove the foliage. Leave your potatoes in the ground for another 10 days before harvesting. Once out of the ground, leave them to dry for a couple of hours before storing.
  • STORING: Main crop potatoes are perfect for storing to use throughout the autumn. Ideally, store harvested potatoes in a container that will exclude light and allow moisture to escape, such as a hessian sack or brown paper bag. Store in a cool, dry, and dark place, and check regularly for any growth.
