BLOOD RED Spring Onions - PURPLE QUEEN Dwarf Beans - WHITE CASPER Aubergine
BLOOD RED Spring Onions
Grow these incredibly tasty sweet and mild BLOOD RED Spring Onions. They make a salad stand out from all the others and are a great talking point over a meal!
They are loaded with nutrients and are a good source of Vitamin C & K. They are also known to help fight certain cancers due to them belonging to the genus Allium. They also help maintain good eyesight. These are only some of the benefits so get growing these healthy additions to any meal.
The unmistakably gorgeous burgundy-red bulbs with a topknot of deep green look fabulous on the plot or as edging to a flower or herb bed. Despite the high-class looks it's very easy to grow, and versatile too: harvest the bulbs when young and slender and enjoy over and over.
PURPLE QUEEN Dwarf Beans
Purple Queen Dwarf beans are the sort of fun, sassy crop every stylish gardener wants to grow in their good-looking veg plot. They race up their supports, burst into shocking magenta flower, and then produce hundreds of gorgeous regal purple beans. Purple Queen is a stunning plant with deep glossy purple pods, dark purplish green foliage and delicate purple flowers: wasted in the vegetable patch! The plants are upright, compact and bushy and can be grown in pots and containers. Of course with beans it’s all about flavour, Purple Queen is one of the best eating beans around. The taste is wonderfully fresh with a crisp, clean aftertaste and the fact that they are also string less heightens the culinary experience. The pods are attractive and round with a waxy finish. They can be eaten whole or sliced, and are also good for freezing. Best picked when around the thickness of a pencil and as with most legumes, the more you pick the better your crop will be.
WHITE CASPER Aubergine
The WHITE CASPER Aubergine, also known as eggplant or brinjal, is technically
a fruit.
However, due to its taste and texture, it’s normally classed and eaten as a vegetable.
Like the tomato (another fruit that’s been thrown in with veggies), aubergine can
be eaten raw with seeds and skin included.
Still, it’s decidedly more pleasant to consume after cooking it for a while.
These lovely Aubergines can help lower blood pressure, help fight disease and contain a lot of vitamin K to help strengthen bones. Vitamin C is abundant in the Aubergine which helps fight the premature aging of the skin.
A win win for everyone!!
LEMON Cucumber - YELLOW BOLDER Beetroot - BLACK SPANISH Radish
LEMON Cucumber
Lemon Cucumbers are a very old variety. The name refers simply to their appearance, not their flavour or aroma. These cucumbers do not smell or taste at all like lemons. They are very similar to a typical cucumber, with tender pale greenish skin and sweet flesh, they have the best flavour while young at about 5cm (2in). The skins toughen with age so pick them when they are small. Lemon cucumbers are grown just like regular cucumbers. They are a vigorous climbing variety that can be grown indoors in a greenhouse or polytunnel or outdoors in humus rich, moist soil and sunshine. They can also be grown in containers and given trellises to scramble over. A favourite with children, Lemon cucumber is perfect for popping into lunchboxes for a healthy snack. By late summer this vigorous climber is smothered in small, round fruits like yellow tennis balls for months. It's an easy-going plant, as happy outside as under cover, and as well as being very pretty.
YELLOW BOLDER Beetroot
There are some things that inherently taste so good, the best way to enjoy them is really with minimal preparation. Who would have thought that peeling and caramelising a few roots in the oven, would glorify this humble root vegetable to new heights? Introduced in the USA in the 1940's. These beauties are an absolute delight, use them whole or quartered, baked, saut\xe9ed, steamed or in soups. They have a slightly honeyed taste, sweeter than red beetroots, and they don’t dye other ingredients or stain the dishes they are prepared in, after all, at the end of a long work day, the last thing you want to do is get your hands dirty. These Beets have a great mild taste with golden roots that can be lifted as baby beets, making an attractive addition to mixed salads, or left to mature. Harvest when the roots are between the size of a golf ball and a tennis ball. Maturing 12 to 16 weeks from sowing.
BLACK SPANISH Radish
With its inky black skin and pure white flesh, the Black Spanish radish is a unique heirloom variety that has been popular in Europe since the 1500s. It is a winter radish that produces globe-shaped roots around 9cm in diameter. The thick black skin resembles that of a rhinoceros. It is so rough and thick that at first glance the black root seems almost inedible. But that craggy, tough exterior is just what protects the tender, spicy, crisp, pure-white flesh. Black radishes are sharp when raw and add a nice bite to salads and raw vegetable plates. When sliced paper-thin, they make beautiful garnishes. Scrub these radishes clean in order to keep the brilliant contrast between the black peel and the white interior. The Black Spanish Round radish is considered a winter radish but can be planted in both spring and autumn.
Where to start??
Plant the seeds as directed in the Hints & Tips booklet. Not too deep and lightly cover the seeds with soil.
Don't forget to use the plant markers so you know what you have planted and where!!
If planting indoors use decent sturdy pots that are the correct size.
Remember you have enough seeds to plant 10 drills/holes of each vegetable.
The seed packets indicate how many seeds per drill/hole so don't overcrowd the area otherwise this can prevent growth!
Plenty of water
Water regularly especially on hot days. Early morning or in the evening is best. If planting indoors make sure the pots have a drainage hole so not to drown the plants.
Plenty of sun
Ensure the area you have planted in has plenty of sunlight and warmth. Plants thrive in the sun. If planting in the house then place them on the windowsill to get the sunlight.
Don't forget to talk to your vegetables! you don't want them to get lonely!!
Enjoy your strange veggies!
Harvest your Ex"SEED"ingly Strange vegetables when they are ripe, give them a wash, and enjoy in your meals!
Share the fruits of your labour and you will be the envy of all your friends.
