Stenciling with Paint
Invariably the most popular and simplest method of stenciling is applying paint on the pattern using a brush or spray. As you can use the stencil as many times as you like, it's an easy and inexpensive way to decorate large surfaces or even create the effect of wallpaper or tiles. You won't require any specialist tools either – the ones you normally keep at home will most likely do the work.
While stenciling with paints you can try using various products, such as chalk, acrylic or glitter paints, special paints with varnish giving a gold or silver effect, fluorescent paints, various kinds of mists, inks or sprays and many more. Any of these will create an amazing effect. All you need is a little patience, some basic manual skills and an idea.
Decorative Plaster
To create dimensional stencil pattern, you can use various materials, such as: hard gypsum, acrylic plaster, travertine plaster, stucco, decorative structural plaster or even ordinary gypsum putty. The choice depends only on the final result that you want achieve. By mixing them with various additives such as glitter, metallic dust, decorative sand, fluorescent powder or simply decorative paint you can create a unique decorative element that will astonish everyone.
The most commonly used method to create a convex pattern is to stick the template to the surface and apply a structural mass on it. To create a concave pattern, just impress the stencil in the previously applied material. It looks unusual but just as amazing. Of course you can also try mixing these techniques.
Using Fabric Paint
With stencils you can create completely new curtains, pillows, tablecloths and make your bags or clothes unique. Just choose a smooth and absorbent material. Using Acrylic fabric paints especially designed for use on fabrics will create the best results and a durbale effect that won't wash off. You can also use all purpose acrylic paint, provided you mix fabric medium to it to make it suitable for painting on fabric. Stiff or sponge brushes are the best choices to make the pattern clear and sharp.
When possible always prewash the fabric before painting, especially garments, which you will definitely be washing. The painting has to be heat set after 24 hours for it to be permanent, usually using an iron or hairdryer. You should find all the necessary insructions included with the paints.
Painting Tiles
If you want to give a new look to your kitchen, bathroom, patio or balcony without spending a lot of money and making a cumbersome renovation you only have one solution - a tile stencil. Putting in a little patience you can make old tiles look like new and have the pattern and color exactly the way you want them.
Whent painting on tiles just remember to thoroughly clean the surface and prime it by applying a base paint. After stenciling the entire surface should be scrupulously covered with varnish to make the final effect durable.
