How to install a gas strut
● First check and compare the design, length, eject force and mounting points before installing the new gas strut.
● Use gas struts with ball joints that will help to alleviate uneven wearing of the piston rod and the seals.
● Place the cup of the baring over the ball joint and fit with the piston rod down.
● Similarly, install the struts with the rod down for optimum lubrication, ensuring as little wear and tear as possible.
● Ensure that the end fixings are in line to prevent side load forces and that they are fully tightened onto the strut.

Do’s and Don'ts
Do’s:

Remember that it is the gas struts that support the application (bonnet, boot, hatch etc.) To avoid injuries, ensure a secure fastening of the application when replacing the struts.

Check mounting points in the body, if there is damage they should be changed.

It is always recommended to replace the gas struts in pairs.

Don’ts:

Do NOT try to compress by Hand. They can NOT be compressed by Hand.

Do NOT Lubricate your gas strut because they contain oil for damping and self-lubrication.

Do NOT scratch, bend or paint the rod.

Gas struts should NOT be over-compressed or over-extended and never attempt to re-gas/refill a strut. This is very hazardous and dangerous.

Do NOT try to open or drill into a Gas Strut.

Length and Force Calculation
How to Calculate the Gas Strut Length and Force Required
is what we believe to be the simplest way to work out the pressure required for gas struts being installed to keep open any lid, door, roof window, awning etc etc. In general the length to choose for gas struts is about 55% of the height of the door you are trying to keep open.
So if you have a door that is 1000mm in height a 550mm long gas strut would be about right. In simple terms we are talking half the door height plus a bit when determining optimal gas strut length.
Please use the formula on the left to calculate the force required for your gas struts.
